Does building in public on X work for AI SaaS?
It works best when the founder already has an audience. 6 of the 21 ranked AI businesses with a sourced growth channel name X, and 3 lead with it: DataExpert.io ($53,200 a month), SEObot ($33,400 a month), notis.ai ($13,400 a month), all payment-verified (checked Nov 5, 2026). Founders starting from scratch report modest early results, like $532 in 97 days or $1,015 a month after 50 days, from daily posting and thousands of replies.

Verified MRR and subscriptions from Stripe via TrustMRR. "Channel as listed" is the founder's own list on TrustMRR or a founder statement, so the channel is self-reported even when the revenue is verified. Per sub = MRR ÷ active subscriptions (our math). Nobody here publishes X ad spend.
Not in the table because their revenue is not payment-verified on our leaderboard: TypingMind (~$130–160k / month, self-reported; founder credits X) and Photo AI ($86k / month, self-reported; built in public by Pieter Levels). Chatbase credits viral X posts, but its listing was removed, so it is out of every ranking.
How does X compare with SEO, TikTok and paid ads?
| Main channel | Ranked businesses | Median MRR | Median per sub | Biggest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO / YouTube | 7 | $21,200 | $33 | Rezi ($241,000) |
| TikTok / Instagram | 5 | $20,600 | $4 | Nutria (Calyra) ($46,800) |
| Founder audience on X | 3 | $33,400 | $64 | DataExpert.io ($53,200) |
| Paid ads (Meta) | 3 | $23,900 | $46 | Vid.AI ($50,400) |
| Communities (Reddit, Slack) | 2 | $209,000 | $34 | Postiz ($352,000) |
| Other | 1 | $14,400 | $140 | Glossa ($14,400) |
Main channel = the first channel each business names on TrustMRR or in founder statements. Ranked = verified payment data synced in the last 30 days, same rule as the leaderboard. Small groups: read medians as a direction.
The 6 businesses that name X anywhere have a median of $37,000 a month, against $22,100 for all 21 with a sourced channel. The ones that lead with X are run by founders with a following: SEObot's founder has 116k+ followers on X (per its listing), and DataExpert.io sells data engineering courses to its founder's audience. X looks like an amplifier for someone people already follow, not a cold-start channel.
What do founders starting from zero report?
| Source | Product | Reported result | Effort | Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r/microsaas, Apr 13, 2026 | Solo landing-page SaaS | $532 in 97 days; first paid user was someone he had talked to on X; 19 days in a row at $0 | Daily posts, 50 to 100 replies a day (about 8,300 total) | reported (founder claim) |
| r/buildinpublic, Jul 7, 2026 | X growth co-pilot | $1,015 MRR in 50 days (35 founding members at $29); about 20% trial-to-paid | 8 scheduled posts a day, 7,437 replies; had a follower head start | reported (founder claim) |
| r/buildinpublic, Aug 13, 2026 | SocialCrawl | $0 to $12K in 4 months; X plus Reddit posts, which later helped Google and ChatGPT traffic | Building in public on X and Reddit | reported (founder claim) |
| Marc Lou, Mar 10, 2026 | DataFast (analytics) | X launch brought the first few dozen users and about $500 MRR; 4 months to $1,000; about 10% a month to $20,000 | Daily work on the product, an existing X audience | reported (founder claim) |
The common thread: replies did more than posts. Both Reddit founders say the work was conversations, thousands of them, and both say they had zero-revenue stretches. The founders with the biggest X results already had an audience before they launched.
Does X still bury posts with links?
X says it does not. In July 2026, X's head of product Nikita Bier told Mark Zuckerberg he no longer needs to put links in replies, and Elon Musk said X had not penalized links for over a year (as reported by Recurpost). OpenTweet's data on 28,124 posts from Jan 1 to Oct 10, 2026 found a typical account's link posts got 1.05 times the impressions of its no-link posts; links did worse for 27 of 60 accounts. Those are mostly small accounts and impressions only, not clicks.
How well does X traffic convert?
| Source (first touch) | Outside browsers | Engaged | Newsletter signups | Reached /sponsor/ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X | 56 | 22 | 1 | 0 |
| ChatGPT and other AI assistants | 63 | 50 | 3 | 2 |
| Google and Bing | 122 | 45 | 0 | 2 |
| 16 | 13 | 1 | 0 |
The AI Receipts' own first-party analytics, Oct 28 to Nov 4, 2026 (11:07 AM CT), owner, internal and bot-suspect traffic removed. Engaged = viewed a second page, scrolled or interacted. One small site, one week: a direction, not a benchmark.
X brought almost as many people as ChatGPT this week, but most read one page and left: fewer than half engaged, against about 80% of ChatGPT visitors. The lesson for founders: send X readers to a specific page that answers the post, not your homepage.
How should an AI SaaS use X?
- Reply more than you post. The Reddit founders above wrote 7,000 to 8,300 replies each. Conversations are what turned into customers.
- Post the numbers. SEObot and Photo AI both credit building in public. Photo AI's revenue post alone drew 1.5M+ views on X (per levels.io).
- Link to the exact page. X says links are not penalized, and a specific landing page converts better than a homepage.
- Expect a slow start. The reports from zero: $532 in 97 days, $1,015 a month after 50 days, and four months for DataFast to reach $1,000 a month.
- Add a channel that compounds. Search and listings keep working when you stop posting: how to get backlinks for an AI SaaS, where to list an AI SaaS. Compare Reddit, TikTok and Meta ads.
