How long until an AI app makes its first dollar?

The AI Receipts, published by Bambana LLC · Data checked Oct 14, 2026 · How we verify

Short answer: among the AI businesses where the founder has publicly stated it, first revenue came between ~30 minutes and ~5 weeks after launch or announcement. But we only have sourced answers for 3 of 51 cases. Most founders never say, and we don't guess.

What the fast ones had in common

  • A payment link on day one. TypingMind sold on the same day its MVP shipped. Chatbase's first payment came about 30 minutes after pricing went live (both self-reported).
  • An existing audience or list. DataExpert's first bootcamp went to newsletter subscribers and was full about five weeks after it was announced (self-reported).
  • Timing. TypingMind and Chatbase launched in early 2023, right as LLM APIs opened up.

Counter-examples

Postiz's founder writes that ~4 months of paid marketing for a closed-source version didn't work before he open-sourced it (Postiz revenue). SEObot spent about two years in internal use and beta before its Product Hunt launch (founder post). Fast first dollars aren't the only path to big revenue.
