This is the first piece in our Didn't make it series: real AI businesses that shut down, stalled, or made roughly $0, sourced only from public founder posts or verified payment records. Numbers without a source stay out.

What they tried

Founders Mohamed Leila and a co-founder started Grownomic AI in January 2025 with a thesis that AI could make sophisticated marketing affordable for businesses that had never paid for it. They bootstrapped and gave themselves a year to find product-market fit or stop (Leila, Mar 5, 2026). Self-reported

  1. Google Ads campaign builder. Agentic builder: paste a website URL, AI walks through offer, keywords, ad groups, budget and copy, with human approval at each step. They tested plumbing, junk removal and law firms; law firms stuck and became paying customers.
  2. PPC landing page builder. Agencies told them landing pages were the bottleneck. First version was template/config; by August 2025 they shifted to "vibe coding" full Next.js pages from natural language (Claude Sonnet 4 / Opus 4, LangGraph + Aider on VMs). Built through end of October 2025. Then generic vibe-coding tools (Base44, Lovable) and funded niche competitors closed the gap.
  3. ChatGPT Apps bet. After OpenAI DevDay (Oct 6, 2025), they planned a ChatGPT app building service (two pilot commitments) plus a merchandise ChatGPT app, banking on in-chat discovery. When submissions opened Dec 17, 2025, discovery was not broadly available — the distribution thesis collapsed.

What didn't work

  • Scopes that took too long to MVP. The founder wrote they "kept picking things that took too long to reach an MVP" and weren't getting customer feedback quickly enough — even while repeating "ship fast" as a mantra.
  • Specialization without a moat. The landing-page niche lost ground when general vibe-coding tools did ~80% of the job and funded competitors closed the rest (founder's framing).
  • Betting on a platform feature that didn't ship. The ChatGPT Apps discovery channel was central to the third bet; without it, "the economics no longer worked."
  • Long stretches without customers. Working mostly as two founders without regular customer contact made it "hard to stay convinced that what you are doing matters."

Lessons (from the founder, then ours)

Leila's own takeaways: scope tighter under real constraints; stay connected to customers; and be honest about designing for tomorrow vs solving today's problems. After shutdown he started an AI consulting practice (Adaptive Gradients) — solving paid problems without waiting for a platform feature.

Our read, grounded only in what he published: a hard one-year kill date is rare and useful; two paying clients after three pivots is a signal, not a foothold; and platform bets need a fallback when the feature is delayed. Compare to verified AI businesses that did find a channel — see the leaderboard and ShipFast's verified decline (a different failure mode: peak then collapse, not never getting traction).

FAQ

What was Grownomic?

An AI marketing startup for small businesses, started in January 2025 by Mohamed Leila and a co-founder. They tried a Google Ads campaign builder, a PPC landing-page builder, then a ChatGPT Apps bet, and shut down in January 2026. Source: founder postmortem, Mar 5, 2026.

How much revenue did Grownomic make?

The founder did not publish MRR or ARR. He wrote that they signed two paying law-firm clients on the Google Ads product. That is self-reported; we have no processor-verified figure. If a number is not in the source, we leave it blank.

Why did Grownomic shut down?

They had given themselves one year to find product-market fit or stop. After three pivots, two paying clients, and a ChatGPT Apps discovery bet that did not materialize, both founders felt it was time. Shut down January 2026 (founder postmortem, Mar 5, 2026).
